Preparing to donate

Prepare for your donation by being well rested, eating a healthy breakfast or lunch, and drinking plenty of fluids within 6 hours of donating.

After donating

After your donation, you can expect to feel healthy and normal. You’ll be asked to relax in our facility with a refreshment. After a few minutes, when the TBS professional advises, you’ll be able to proceed with your day as normal. Just avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity until the next day.

Blood screening

After your donation, your blood is tested for the presence of certain viruses or bacteria:

  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus - the virus that causes AIDS.
  • Hepatitis B Virus – a cause of serum hepatitis.
  • Hepatitis C Virus – another blood-borne cause of hepatitis.
  • Rapid Plasma Reagin test – a screening test for syphilis.

If any of these is present in your blood, you will be notified confidentially.

All blood suppliers must abide by blood-safety laws, and follow all safety requirements.
